Networking Pitch

If you’re trying to build your business through networking, remember to mention the following when you meet people:

1. Your name – even if it’s on your business card and your name badge, some people learn by hearing (vs. reading), so it’s always a good idea to say your name when meeting someone

2. What you do – if you get blank stares when you say what you do, then it means you’re not being clear enough. Revise your business description until you don’t get blank stares. For example, when I said I was a “business consultant,” I got blank stares. When I say that I help people grow their businesses using marketing, they usually get it.

3. What sorts of people you work with – Be as specific as possible about what your target audience is seeking. I say something like “I work with small business owners who need help with marketing materials like websites and brochures and also strategic decisions regarding online and offline marketing and advertising and PR.”

This should all be quick and natural. Now, for the most important part, ask the question:

“What do you do, and what sorts of referrals can I send to you?”

Remember: networking events are about building relationships, and saying this lets people know that you are serious about sending them business.

Networking, Socializing, and Tweeting

Networking, Socializing, and Tweeting

Going out for a drink with friends, playing golf, and hanging out at a cookout are all ways that we build relationships. It is the social aspects of our relationships that make for strong business relationships too. It is those times when I get to know someone personally that makes me want to help them achieve their goals. While we may not be fast friends we have developed a deeper relationship and it is that relationship that builds trust and a desire to help. Building my network effectively is very important to me, adding the right people, building relationships with them requires that I stay in communication with them.

One of the things that I love about Twitter is my ability to have communication with local tweeters, to meet them face to face at tweet-ups in a casual manner. Because we have spent so much time getting to know each other on twitter it is as if we have already met, we start the relationship much further along than if I had just met them. I already know what they are interested in by the tweets they post and the links the tweet. I learn about their business when they tweet and list their blogs and I build credibility with my followers when I take the time to post good material on my blog, when I post good tweets. I give to my network of tweeters by recommending them and retweeting their tweets. When we finally do meet at a tweet-up we already know each other.

If you are tweeting take a little time to set up groups of local people who are tweeting. They are most likely people you are going to have the opportunity to meet and build networking relationships with. For me, Tweetdeck has been a great tool for sorting my tweeters and creating groups that I can interact with, create relationships with and add to my network.

The Ragan Social Media un-Conference

The Ragan Social Media un-Conference

Following a stressful week from my final exams, I went to Chicago with Lindsay Allen (in the teal shirt) for a social media un-Conference.

Even though I had no idea what an un-Conference would be like, I couldn’t miss out on the opportunity to learn more about PR, see Chicago and meet up with people like Allan Schoenberg, Mike Pilarz, Amy Mengel (see a post I wrote with her help here), Christine Hartter, Nikki Stephan, Lauren Weber and Ari Adler (who, by chance, is not an M&M in real life!).

The Ragan Web site said, “There will be no speakers at the un-Conference, meaning we’ll all be learning from one another. However, there will be conference facilitators leading all of the idea-generating, problem-solving sessions.”

This unstructured environment was great because it enabled public relations professionals to ask for advice and trade ideas and strategies with their peers. People talked about Twitter, Facebook, blogging, building relationships and more.

When the facilitator asked for blog success stories, not many people raised their hands. Lindsay whispered, “Rachel! Raise your hand! Raise your hand!” So I actually gave a quick, impromptu spiel about how I started blogging and how it has been effective in my career to a couple hundred people. I even got a few cheers when I announced I was a CMU student.

In addition to the discussions, another valuable aspect was the networking. After the un-Conference, many people made arrangements to meet-up (or tweet-up). Having dinner with people you had only previously known from Twitter is a great experience. And people you already know will introduce you to more great professionals.

Have you ever been to an un-Conference? What did you like about the Ragan un-Conference?

At the Ragan un-ConferenceAnd here’s a picture of me at the un-Conference taken by Lindsay’s MacBook. The Drake was a great place!

Do People Like You?

Do People Like You?

How many times have you met someone and you knew right away you did not like them?  Or on the other hand you met someone and right away you really liked them.  What is it that makes one person likable while the other unlikable?

People want to do business with people they know, like and trust.  Like is very important factor in building relationships.  When was the last time that you referred one of your best customers to someone you did not like? How many times have you chosen to do business with someone because you liked them.

I had the opportunity to experience this for myself recently when I was looking to hire someone to do some work for me. There were two people both equally qualified to do the project. I ended up going with the person I liked and his price was 12% higher. I was willing to pay more because I liked the person.

Do you want to be more likable?  Follow these simple tips:

  • Speak Less, Listen More – People don’t want to hear about you they want to talk about themselves.
  • Don’t be a know it all – Even if you do know everything you don’t have to prove it.
  • Be Engaged – Looking at your watch, over someones shoulder or checking your cell is not engaged
  • Smile – A smile that goes to your eyes wins people over
  • Give a Compliment – Whenever possible give a compliment about something, it wins others over.
  • Follow up with people – When you take the time to follow up with people they are engaged, and want to learn more about you

Little things make you likable and being likable will have a positive impact on your bottom line!
