101 Reasons You Deserve Success

101 Reasons You Deserve Success

Wednesday Inspiration #18

You deserve success because:

  • #1. You are alive.
  • #2. – #101. See above.

If you are not finding the success you want in your career or life, it is not because you don’t deserve it. The very fact that space has been made for you and that breath has been granted to you entitles you to all the success you can desire and are willing to work for. Remember that the work of creating success starts with your mind. Do you believe you deserve to be successful? Or are you running a checklist in your head of all the things you must do to deserve success. Deserving success is different than having success. The “having” comes from taking the right actions. But here’s the catch -  you will never be fully motivated to take the right actions if you don’t think you deserve the success in the first place.

Journal: Be honest – list some reasons you “think” you don’t deserve success?

  • I don’t know enough
  • I don’t have enough experience
  • I don’t have a real talent
  • Why try – something always happens to keep me down
  • I always mess up
  • Everyone else is so much better
  • I should just be happy with what I got
  • [Add your own message here]

What other false messages are you playing over and over in your mind? Remember whatever you feed grows.*

Assignment: Instead of defining why you are not successful refocus that energy on choosing what success you will create today and what success you are preparing for tomorrow, next week, next month, next year.

Affirmation: I deserve success simply because I am here.

*Not sure how to push past the negative messages holding you back – get three techniques for working with negative messages in your complimentary coaching session.  Click here to schedule or call 347-933-3399.

The Secret to Getting the Career Opportunity You Want

The Secret to Getting the Career Opportunity You Want

Wednesday Inspiration #17

Don’t wait for extraordinary opportunities. Seize common occasions and make them great. Weak men wait for opportunities; strong men make them. -Orison Swett Marden

Most of us have at least one person in our lives that has been waiting for that perfect opportunity to do or have what they really want. The girlfriend who has always wanted to start her own business and has been waiting for a financial windfall to give her the perfect set up. The uncle who always wanted to go back to school but has been waiting until till he found a job with more flexible hours. The brother who has dreamed for years of working for a particular company but is waiting until he hears they are hiring again. Or the person in your network that has been waiting for years to be promoted to the next level and is sure it will happen when the current person in that role leaves.

It is a dangerous defeating trap to believe that our opportunities depend solely on time, people or circumstance creating the window we need. Especially when we hold the keys to unlocking opportunity. If opportunity seems to be passing you by, start with changing what you are thinking and saying about the opportunity you need. Then start talking to people about what you want to do – and make sure you are talking to the right people. The right people are those that will hear you, support you and can help you connect with the information or other people you need. Turn over every stone and explore every trail – especially the ones that seem less conventional.

Challenge: What opportunity will you create today for yourself? For others?

Keys to Building Your Brand: Authenticity

Post image for Keys to Building Your Brand: Authenticity

by Tai Goodwin on July 7, 2009

Post 1 of 6

A few weekends ago I participated on a panel discussion hosted by Darnyelle Jervey. The focus of her event was Maximizing the Incredible You. The very first question to the panel was, “What has been instrumental in helping develop your brand?”

Once you get beyond the buzz, at the core of branding is the concept of being able to position yourself. Positioning yourself as an employee or entrepreneur is critical to communicating your value, being connected to the right opportunities, and creating the right environment for success. In this series of posts I’ll be sharing the five things that have been important in helping me effectively craft my brand not only as the Career Makeover Coach, but what helped me position myself throughout my career with corporate employers as well.

The five keys that have helped create my brand are:

  • Authenticity
  • Passion
  • Knowledge
  • Attraction
  • Leveraging Technology

Let’s start with authenticity…

Authenticity allows you to leverage who you are and what you’ve done in establishing credibility. Although not impossible, it would be a challenge to market myself as the Career Makeover Coach if I had ever only had one job in my entire career.

You can read my full profile on the Tai’s Story page, but here’s the snapshot: I started out as an AmeriCorps member serving in Philadelphia schools. Flash forward about 14 years a you’ll find me managing and building e-learning courses for a global IT company. In between those two roles I’ve had about five different positions in different industries never with the same title or exact responsibilities. I can’t say that I was always strategic but I always chose my next move-based online wanting to do work that I was passionate about with assignments I knew I could be good at (even if I hadn’t done it before). I finally added strategy to the mix when I decided to make a move to something that I could not only love but get paid the salary that I wanted too. It didn’t happen overnight. It took some work. It took some planning and it took time. But in four years I was able to not only have the position that I wanted in the kind of company that I wanted to work for, I was also making the salary that I wanted. Without moving into a management position I was able to more than double my salary. If you had asked me 10 years ago would I be in a position to turn down a six-figure management position with a Fortune 500 company because I had a better option it would seem like a joke but that’s exactly what happened. I still have the most recent job offer letter that I turned down from Canon a few years ago. I joke about framing it. [click to continue…]

Reclaim Your Brilliance

brilliant star

by Tai Goodwin on July 1, 2009

Wednesday Inspiration #16

This week I am sharing Marianne Williamsons’ poem Our Deepest Fear.  Her message ties directly into my goal of helping my clients go from bright to brilliant. – Enjoy!

Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate.

Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure.

It is our light, not our darkness, that most frightens us.

We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant,

gorgeous, handsome, talented and fabulous?

Actually, who are you not to be?

You are a child of God.

Your playing small does not serve the world.

There is nothing enlightened about shrinking

so that other people won’t feel insecure around you.

We are all meant to shine, as children do.

We were born to make manifest the glory of God within us.

It is not just in some; it is in everyone.

And, as we let our own light shine, we consciously give

other people permission to do the same.

As we are liberated from our fear,

our presence automatically liberates others.

Reflect on this: What are you sacrificing by playing small to make other people feel comfortable? Who would you be without limiting yourself to other peoples’ limited understanding of your purpose and passion?

Hypervisibilty at Work and Other Browseworthy Links

This week’s 5 browseworthy links…

1. Attention all work-a-holics: step away from the keyboard (this includes those little blackberry keyboards too). With summer getting under way some people are planning at least some kind of get away. Then there are those of us who have hard time trying to remember how to even pronounce the word vacation. If you fall into the latter category check out this great article I found on the importance of getting away to reduce the likelihood of burnout: Changing Pace -and Place – to Avert Burnout.

2. I love the articles at WomanSuite so much I am adding them to the Career Makeover Coach blog roll! Great articles on how to win at work and related professional development topics for women. Must read articles: Hypervisibility at Work (Part 1 and 2).

3. Thinking of starting your own business? Many talented and skilled professionals are thumbing their noses at a job market that points a disapproving finger at their overqualified profiles. In addition, another group of corporate rockstars have decided to be proactive and look for ways to control their own income and “security.” For those questioning the best type of business to start here’s an INC.com slide show:  The Best Industries to Start a Business in Right Now.

4. Did you miss last weeks’ From Bright to Brilliant show with guest Ellie Nieves? Ellie gave some excellent tips for developing your personal brand. After you listen to the replay of the show – be sure to check out the transcript from an interview she did: How To Get Promoted.

5. Productivity 501 is a site focused on sharing tips and tools for increasing personal productivity. Authors blog about everything from money to workspace management. My favorite find on the s is their email course: Procrastination Prevention.

8 Ways to Be Happy at Work

8 Ways to Be Happy at Work

For most of us, work is a requirement. And until we uncover or create the opportunity that allows us to work our passion, we may be in a job that’s just, well…a job. Accepting that your 9-5 is just a job works fine until your passion and purpose start calling you. Once you begin to acknowledge your purpose and feed your passion, your “day job” may begin to feel like a burden.

So how do you make it through the 40+ hours a week without feeling like you are serving time for a crime you didn’t commit? Here are eight tips on how to be happy at work:

  1. Stay out of drama and away from contentious people.
  2. Find a buddy. Research shows that people that have friends at work have a higher rate of career satisfaction.
  3. Initiate a new project – tie it to a new skill you want to learn or practice.
  4. Stop talking about how bad things are. Lift the weight of your environment by speaking positively about your work, your co-workers, and your company.
  5. Choose a better perspective: Look for opportunities and wins instead of shortcomings and losses.
  6. Learn something new – read a book, read an article, take an on-line course. Find a way to get new information and let it inspire you.
  7. Practice gratitude. Be grateful for what you do have and what you have the potential to create.
  8. Get a life. If you are pouring all of yourself into work that’s not satisfying, create a better balance by adding more “extra-curricular” activities.

The Myth of Perfect Timing

The Myth of Perfect Timing

Wednesday Inspiration #15from go

Don’t wait until everything is just right. It will never be perfect. There will always be challenges, obstacles and less than perfect conditions. So what. Get started now. With each step you take, you will grow stronger and stronger, more and more skilled, more and more self-confident and more and more successful. – Mark Victor Hansen

If you are waiting for all the pieces of your puzzle to fall perfectly in place before you move or before you make a decision – you will never get started. Saying that you are waiting for things to get right is an excuse. Waiting for things to change, like money, your job, your spouse, your kids, your friends, your situation implies that there is no other action required from you but to wait. If patience is a virtue, avoidance and procrastination are vices that contradict its value.

Allowing your dreams to be put on hold and your life to become stagnant while you wait for things to work out will only lead to frustration and disappointment.

Your situation may not be perfect, but you can perfectly position yourself for the opportunity you need.

Coaching Challenge: Identify three small steps you can take today to work toward your goals. It could be a phone call, a google search, printing your resume – whatever the three things you choose – commit and do it NOW!

As “The Career Makeover Coach”, Tai Goodwin is on a mission to help ambitious individuals reinvent their professional lives by centering on their passion and purpose. Holding as a core belief that we are all called to divine purpose and gifted with a unique passion, Tai uses a results driven, spiritually grounded approach to help clients create career paths to support the lifestyle they desire.
