How I Ended Clutter Pile-up

This is written by a client who wants to remain anonymous.

I have so much stuff under my bathroom sink I decided to take Marilyn’s advice and clear the clutter, even though I thought I needed everything that was there. I also thought I knew everything that was there.

I was surprised to find 12 new tubes of toothpaste and more pedicure supplies including dried out polish than I can ever use.

It is now organized and I can find everything. I put likes together and even though it doesn’t look like I have any more room all like things are together and I know what I have and it looks better. I feel better too because I finally took the time to clear clutter that kept piling up.

From Marilyn: Thank you for sharing your story with us. It is amazing what you find when you clear clutter–then you can see what you really have.

How to make Direct Mail work for you

How to make Direct Mail work for you

Today’s MarketingSherpa Blog says that direct mail may decline by 38% over then next five years. What does this mean to small businesses? Well, rather than meaning you should also reduce your direct mail programs, it means that now might be the time to increase them.

As long as they are finely-tuned and highly-targeted, direct mail campaigns can be very effective in growing your business. The biggest mistake I see is that people think they can just slap something together and send it out and the phone will ring. Nothing could be further than the truth.

In direct mail, you need to make sure that your message – specifically your Call to Action – is clear as a bell. Tell your customers exactly what you want them to do. This is the only way that direct mail can make an impact.

  • Focus on a special promotion or offer a coupon, then tell people whether they need to call you, e-mail you or come in. Tell them specifically what action they need to take.
  • Don’t clutter the piece with too many words. Keep it short and simple.
  • Make sure you have a tracking method in place. In other words – make sure that you will know whether your efforts had any impact on your bottom line.

Good luck, and let me know if you need help!

Don’t Clear Clutter By Being A Pop Up

Don’t Clear Clutter By Being A Pop Up

Clutter Control for your home, office and lifeDo you ever watch T.V.? I have five shows I watch and on weekends I watch movies if I can find the time. I have noticed the networks have started doing something that I find irritating and completely unnecessary.

When watching a show a pop up will appear in one or both lower corners of the screen. For an instant my eyes go to the popup and my mind is distracted from what I am watching.

Is this how we clear clutter when we are organizing? Do you pick up one piece of paper and put it down as you spot another one to pick up. Or is your mind on your next project, not giving the one you are working on your attention?

When you clear clutter stay focused on the task at hand and it will go quicker and you will actually will be more efficient.

Take Another Look To Get Rid Of Clutter

Get rid of clutter in your home, office and lifeRemember that big project I told you about—helping my daughter clear clutter while organizing her storage shed?

Another idea I wanted to share is that after you have organized the bins and boxes and you have gotten rid of all the clutter (or you think you have) and you have assigned homes for everything they may need to be moved again. This applies to a storage room or any other place where you use containers.

After we had placed several containers on some shelves my daughter stood back and realized some needed to be moved because it made more sense to have them arranged differently so she could get to the ones she used most often.

So if you don’t quite know where things belong, use your best judgment and then step back and take another look. If you need to change things around that is okay. Before you know it you will have gotten rid of clutter and organized while doing it.

When We Get Rid Of Clutter Do We Think Like A Weed?

When We Get Rid Of Clutter Do We Think Like A Weed?

Get rid of clutter in your home and lifeNow that I am through with writing my book which I was working on 9 to 12 hours a day for six months I feel like I have a life again. (For those who don’t know I wrote a book for a publisher on Organizing. They titled it Go Organize! Conquer Clutter In Three Simple Steps. It will be in major bookstores in December.) So now I have more freedom I have been working in the yard.

There is one pesky weed I noticed that is coming up right in the same spot as it did last year in the driveway. All summer I pulled it out and it just returns.

I was thinking this is like organizing. Do we get rid of clutter or do we just move it from one place to another? Like my weed to we find temporary solutions instead of permanent ones which would save us time and effort?

To get rid of clutter; designate a specific place for everything in your home and when finished using an item, put it in its home. Teach your family to do the same. I find as a professional organizer people (including children) are more willing to keep things organized if they know where things belong.

Get Rid Of Clutter So You Can See Again

Get Rid Of Clutter So You Can See Again

Get rid of clutter in your home and lifeStuff, stuff and more stuff. Do you have things you love but you have so much of them that you don’t even see them anymore? Do you have a collection of dolls, rocks, shells, figurines or other collections and they are in a curio cabinet or some other place but they are so packed in that you don’t really see them?

Get rid of clutter in your home and life

As a professional organizer as I am helping women get rid of clutter I suggest that when we have too much we really don’t see it anymore it is time to get rid of clutter and do other things with our treasures so they will not just become dust collectors.

•Rotate the items in an out of the display where they live. Pack some away carefully and bring them back out again in a few months, and pack others away that have been on display.
•It may be time to part with some of your treasures. If it is; give them to family and friends you want to have them. They could be boxed up and labeled gifts and then be wrapped later and given to them for birthdays or holidays.
•If they must be out, arrange them in such a way that they don’t look cluttered. Maybe some items just need to be moved to another place in the room.

Get rid of clutter in your home and life

No matter how you get rid of clutter in your home you will be happier that you did because you will start seeing your treasures again. And only you can make that decision.

Priortize To Get Rid of Clutter

Priortize To Get Rid of Clutter

My book is done!! For those of you who didn’t know I wrote a book for a publishing company who found me through my articles on the web and asked if I had ever thought about writing a book. Long story short, they liked what I proposed and Go Organize! Conquer Clutter in Three Simple Steps will be in major book stores this December.

I just did my last author read through cover to cover and now I have to reorder my priorities. What will I do with my extra time? One of the first things I did was go to bed earlier and I got a full 7 hours of sleep. I know they say everyone needs 8 hours, but I personally believe it depends on the person how much sleep they need. I do well on 6 hours.

Which brings me to my favorite thing to chat about—organizing to get rid of clutter. There is not just one way to get rid of clutter. There are some simple guidelines to follow to make it easier, faster and last longer. One simple suggestion I believe in is to work from the inside out in any room in your home. In the bedroom, start in the closet or in a drawer. In the kitchen start in the cupboard or a drawer. You get the idea, no matter what room it is that you want to get rid of clutter don’t tackle the counter, floor or what is on the chairs first.

What is your super doper tip to get rid of clutter?

Reduce Clutter With Removable Shelves

Reduce Clutter With Removable Shelves

Reduce clutter in your kitchenI have a cupboard that is only 8 inches wide in my kitchen—honest, I measured it. And as you know my kitchen is SMALL so even this is premium space. But what will fit here? Even if I wasn’t so inclined, because of my small kitchen I am forced to reduce clutter before it starts.

I use this cupboard for my storage bags. I doubled my space by adding two removable shelves. (Top and bottom) This way I can easily get to what I need and I can store more supplies in my kitchen.

On the lower shelf I have a plastic bowl I was going to recycle that holds cookie decorating supplies and I use a zip lock bag for plastic utensils I take with me when I go to homes to help others reduce clutter.

Do you have a small space that you use to reduce clutter?

6 Tips To Reduce Clutter In The Pan Cupboard

6 Tips To Reduce Clutter In The Pan Cupboard

When you have a tiny kitchen you just have to stack things. This is a photo of my pan cupboard. Now I look at it in the photo I wonder how I ever cook, there aren’t many pans. But obviously I don’t need all that many. (There is one frying pan and another sauce pan in use right now).

When spaces are small it is easier to reduce clutter because the space determines how much can be kept in the cupboards.

Tips to reduce clutter in a pan cupboard:

•Stack pans on top of each other, turning the lids upside down on the pan so they will have a place to sit. (I know this is a pain but it works best to stack pans when there is limited space).
•Keep likes together.
•If you have room store lids in a separate drawer or standing up in a lid holder.
•Only keep what you use and like.
•Get rid of old, burnt, dented, stained cookware, get some you really like and that lights you up when you use it.

I also have gadgets and bowls in this cupboard as I have no place else for them, there was room here and they are organized together.

As part of Show and Share week we would love to see how you have organized your pan cupboard. Please email me your photos to info@mailynbohn.com I will withhold your real name if you request.

5 Tips On How To Reduce Clutter In The Medicine Cabinet

5 Tips On How To Reduce Clutter In The Medicine Cabinet

Show ‘N Share Week on how to store medicine:

reduce clutter in the medicine cabinet

Are your medicines in the medicine cabinet in the steamy bathroom? The humidity in the bathroom can change the potency of medicines so it is better to store them some other place. That is the latest advice from the research I have done.
It is time to reduce clutter in the medicine cabinet. Above is a photo of how I store my medicines.

Tips on how to reduce clutter in the medicine cabinet:

•Store medicines together in one container.
•Label the container
•Use plastic bags to separate different meds (cough drops, foot creams, nasal drops etc). Label the bags.
•Every 3 to 6 months check for expiration dates and get rid of expired medicines by taking them to your pharmacists for them to recycle. (It is not safe for our ground water for them to be flushed or put in the trash).
•I recommend keeping medicines separated from first aid supplies. Here is how I do it:

I have all the first aid supplies in one container and as you can see I keep the shoe polish in another container on top of this one. These three containers take up one shelf above the towels.

Again, my goal is to have my medicines and first aid supplies easily available and all together in one place. Family members who take prescription medication daily have their pills in another secure place. My goal isn’t to have it look like a page in a magazine—that would take too much work and too much time. For our life style it isn’t practical.

We would love to see your photos on how you store your meds, please email them to me at info@marilynbohn.com and we will put them in a future blog. Or leave a comment telling us how you store your medicines.
