One Guy, One Girl, Two Start-Ups and a Relationship

Quick, which is more difficult – work or life?

Up until a year ago, both competed for my attention, each piling weight onto the seesaw to rise towards the favored position. A year ago, however, I started working at Alice and Ryan and I started hitting our stride (both of which were not without challenges, however… many, many challenges).

While working for a start-up demands hours, it demands more in mental energy, and in spiky unpredictable lengths, where the only invariable is that you know work will be stop and go. This means it’s often difficult to separate work and life, especially in the statuesque pursuit of balance, but while I used to recognize and promote blur, I’m now mindful of the distinct delineation between the two.

Smart people don’t balance two sides of the same coin – your work and life are, after all, inseparable from the backbone of your binding. You can’t push one to one side and one to the other and hope equilibrium presents itself because the entities are glued to each other and to you.

What I mean, for example, is that I cannot see Ryan and refrain from discussing at length our work. I have long agreed that behind every good man is a good woman, and likewise, the same holds true for Ryan and I on both sides. While he is the one that shows up to Brazen headquarters each day, my ideas fill his head. While I’m the one who walks into Alice each morning, Ryan’s sense and advice follows me.

More to the point, I guess, is that there is a mutual respect for what we choose to do with the majority of our day and into the night, and sometimes into our sleep and into dreams. Although when we do relate to each other our dreams from the night before, it’s not very likely to include the mention of a spreadsheet.

Right now, Ryan is across the street from me working. His offices are located diagonal from my condo, but I have yet to see him this week except for when he dropped me off from our weekend in Philly together on Sunday. I was working on a Wall Street Journal exclusive early this week, and he’s working on big plans for Brazen later this week. We also have friends, family, a basketball league, dance classes, books, blogs, grocery shopping, the gym, bill-paying and other magnitudes and minutiae of daily life competing for our attention.

Oh, and the new season of Chuck just started.

When I walk into work, much of that has to go away. I imagine this is natural for most people who enjoy their jobs, but particularly at start-ups you have to be ready to do whatever is put in front of you that day. Everything planned for the day will get eaten up by new priorities, larger plans and whether or not the toucan (our CEO) monopolizes all the time with the dolphin (our President and my direct boss). This can be best described as acting as a pivot, keeping your center, but spinning to each new person and project that appears.

One of the best parts of working at a start-up is that an idea spun in the morning has the potential to be fully realized by the afternoon. It can be that quick and magical and exhilarating. Also, the customers. When I worked for a non-profit in a trailer across from the food pantry that I was raising money for, I thought I wouldn’t again experience the rewards of being in such direct contact with the people I helped. But Alice has that.

One of the more challenging things is that blurring my work and my blog and my life to such an extent can make me very unhappy. Sometimes I feel like I’m always working which is frustrating, so I’ve tried to have clearer boundaries. I don’t really believe in work/life balance as an ideal, but no longer do I trust in work/life blur so much either.

As a generation, we’re always on. Is it okay to tweet during your workday? How often? What about talk to your significant other? Send personal emails? Do you work with your partner at night? Accept calls from the boss? Check your iPhone during a movie? Where is the line drawn and what is acceptable?

For Ryan and I, we have chosen to spend the majority of our day, not with each other, but with two different start-up companies. Our lives and relationship are more difficult and more enriched because of it. What about you? Work/life balance: truth or myth? Does it stand a chance?

Living in the Present Moment, not the Past or the Future

Living in the Present Moment, not the Past or the Future

Do you constantly think about the past or fantasize about the future? If you do, you are missing the ONLY way to have a great life – living in the present moment.   When you live in the past or the future:

  1. You are always in your head thinking, never just experiencing the moment.
  • Thinking your way through life, you have kept the energy above the neck, and it needs to be below the neck, in the heart.
  • When the mind is quiet, the heart opens. (In other words, when you stop thinking, you automatically end up in the present moment.)
  • Only then, can you experience joy.

   2.  Thinking keeps you one step away from the action.

  • The action is the moment, the present moment.  There is nothing else.
  • Anything else is either the past or the future.
  • Remember, even when you go to the past or the future in your head, you are still thinking in the present moment.

   3.  Fantasizing is different than actually doing something about your dreams.

  • There is nothing wrong with planning for the future; that is very different than feeling your life cannot begin until some future date.
  • We fantasize instead of do.  Step up, be present, and start doing things that will build your future.
  • If you are WAITING for something to happen before you will feel good, even if that something comes, it will never make you feel good for very long.

    4.  Always talking about the past keeps you stuck and fearful.

  • We keep going to the past because we are immobilized.
  • We may rationalize that the future is scary but that is only because we refuse to accept the present moment and make the required changes.
  • Memories are wonderful but they do not substitute for a life today, right now.

     5.  Know that the future is nothing more than the present projected forward.

  • I often have clients that wonder what the future will be like. I tell them that if they do nothing different than what they are doing today, that what they have at this moment will be their future.
  • Look at today.  It’s your present moment but a month ago it was your future in the making.
  • At every moment you are living out your destiny (what you have created in the past) and at the very same moment you are creating your future by how you deal with what has come to you.

Making sense of my Saturday

Making sense of my Saturday

Today is so odd. I know I have a few things to take care of before I move next Thursday but I’m not sure where to start. I had a dream last night about leaving Bangkok, but Bangkok was a small regional city in a country where the capital was Jakarta. My office was similar to my real office, but had a look about it that reminded me of a luxury hotel and a much better view (I could see Jakarta). My apartment closet (that I keep my clothes in) was located in my office so when it was time to finish work and fly back to Australia (via Jakarta) I was running late and hadn’t even taken the clothes from my closet and packed them in my suitcase. Then I realised I’d forgotten to book my flight anyway.

Anxious dreams about missing flights are not uncommon for me. Usually they seem to be reflecting anxiety I have about something that could just as well be related to travel as to anything else, but this time I have a real flight to catch which makes the symbolism even more obvious. Also, someone asked me yesterday what day I was flying out and I said, “Thursday night.” Then they asked what my last day of work would be and I said, “Thursday.” Then this group of people standing around told me that was a dumb idea and I need to take a day off. I don’t need to take a day off, but their words got lodged in my mind somewhere and made me worry that I needed to take a day off. Proof positive of the power of words to affect our subconscious I suppose. I think that was another reason for my dream. Running from the office to the plane was a really bad thing in my dream. In reality there will be about four hours between my finishing work and leaving for the airport.

My anxious dreams used to be about being late for my Friday night shift at the bookshop. They even continued for a few years after I stopped working in bookshops. Sometimes I would be hours or days late to my Friday night shift at the bookshop, but I was still trying to get there. Then one night I had a dream that I was running late for the bookshop and I saw Greg who was running late for work at the library. We both sat down on the curb and decided it wasn’t that big a deal anyway, and we’d just skip work that night. That was the last bookshop anxiety dream I had, and so began the ‘missing the plane’ anxiety dreams. Once I was in an airport terminal and got stuck in the China terminal and couldn’t make my way back to the France terminal. That was really confusing.

So now it’s Saturday and I know my mind is anxious about getting organised, but I don’t really have that much to organise. I have a lot to do, I don’t know how I will fit it all in, but it’s pretty straightforward. I’m pretty sure my subconscious is overreacting – but whose doesn’t from time to time?

I came over to Wawee Coffee just now to use their internet because I’ve been waiting for a call from my landlord who has been hard to pin down and remembered that she wanted to use email, so I needed to check email too – she’s probably the greatest source of anxiety. I got here and five minutes later she sent me a text message telling me when we can meet, which makes it easier to plan the rest of my weekend now.

So now that my greatest source of anxiety is more predictable, rather than spending more of the time talking about my dreams, I’ll head back to my apartment and start packing.

What A Wonderful World!

What A Wonderful World!

The Invitation

It doesn’t interest me what you do for a living. I want to know what you ache for, and if you dare to dream of meeting your heart’s longing.

It doesn’t interest me how old you are. I want to know if you will risk looking like a fool for love, for your dreams, for the adventure of being alive.

It doesn’t interest me what planets are squaring your moon. I want to know if you have touched the center of your sorrow, if you have been opened by life’s betrayals, or have become shriveled and closed from fear of further pain! I want to know if you can sit with pain, mine and your own, without moving to hide it or fade it or fix it. I want to know if you can be with JOY, mine or your own: if you can dance with wildness and let the ecstasy fill you to the tips of your fingers and toes without cautioning us to be careful, to be realistic, or to remember the limitations of being human.

It doesn’t interest me if the story you are telling me is true. I want to know if you can disappoint another to be true to yourself: if you can bear the accusation of betrayal and not betray your own soul. I want to know if you can be faithless and therefore trustworthy. I want to know if you can see beauty even when it is not pretty everyday, and if you can source your life from its presence. I want to know if you can live with failure, yours or mine, and still stand on the edge of a lake and shout to the silver of the full moon, “Yes” !

It doesn’t interest me to know where you live or how much money you have. I want to know if you can get up after the night of grief and despair, weary and bruised to the bone, and do what needs to be done for the children.

It doesn’t interest me who you are, or how you came to be here. I want to know if you will stand in the center of the fire with me and not shrink back.

It doesn’t interest me where or what or with whom you have studied. I want to know what sustains you from the inside when all else falls away. I want to know if you can be alone with yourself, and if you truly like the company you keep in the empty moments.

7 Accountability Secrets

7 Accountability Secrets

A great article about accountability by Denise Michaels a fellow ryzer and marketing consultant. Enjoy!

Being held accountable isn’t always fun. However, the benefits are amazing. Accountability can help you achieve the results that have eluded you. If you’ve avoided important goals and tasks in your business it’s not always because you need more how-tos. It’s probably because you need someone to hold you accountable for your results. Agreeing to be held accountable means agreeing to have someone ask you – about your results each week – and support you in getting them.

Here are seven important secrets to how accountability will help you build the business you want so you can live your dreams.

Reduce Procrastination: Being held accountable by one person or a small group of supportive people reduces procrastination. A great thing about owning your own business is no one’s breathing down your neck to “get it done” by a certain date. On the flip side, one of the challenging things about owning a business is no one pressures you – even in a nice way – to complete tasks and goals. If you’re not constantly self-directed or, if you are in some ways but not others – being held accountable will help you stop putting off what you need to do.

Make Real Progress: If you work hard in some areas of your business but other areas your business can only make limited progress. If you’re busy developing new products but not selling – your business can only go so far. If you sell like crazy but don’t set up records to track cash flow – your business can only grow to a certain point before problems surface. If you keep researching but haven’t written and implemented a strategic plan – you don’t have a business you have an idea. Accountability will help you wear all the hats, or, help you decide to delegate work you can’t do to someone else.

Feel Encouraged Again: Maybe you’re avoiding certain tasks because they aren’t the highest and best use of your time or they make you uncomfortable. If asking for the sale is painfully difficult yet you know it’s something you should do – a person to hold you accountable to your goals can make a world of difference. Many people keep asking for more how-to’s and ideas when what would help even more is to return to the basics and actually do the things that work. Owning a business is an amazing personal growth journey. Growing more comfortable and then confident doing the things that formerly gave you “the willies” is a great way to grow and increase your cash flow.

That Extra “Kick” of Motivation: When you are held accountable by someone who cares about your success and your progress – you won’t let them down. Some people spend big bucks attending seminars for a kick of motivation. Three days later they’re back in the same rut. Ongoing support and accountability means you get that positive push in the right direction on a regular basis, usually weekly. Not all at once – and then it fades away a couple days later.

Get to the Real Reason: Sometimes we lie to ourselves about why we aren’t doing what we should in our business. I had a participant in my Masterminding for Success group who believed asking for a sale was wrong. I’ve had others who felt picking up the phone to make initial contact made her look weak or desperate. The real reasons usually boil down to fear. The sooner you face your fear with the support of others, the sooner you can grow beyond it once and for all.

Build Your Confidence: When you do something you wouldn’t do previously your confidence grows a little every time. Our comfort zone is the boundaries around which we operate in. For many business owners our comfort zone is way too small. Expanding your comfort zone might expose you to a little temporary fear – but it will also open you to amazing new possibilities you never imagined. You become the courageous person you always dreamed of.

Make Your Dreams Come True: You started your business because you wanted more independence and freedom than you could have ever experienced as a person with a job working for someone else. Opening up to being held accountable will help you make those dreams come true in your business. If you’re dedicated to create real success open up to the possibility that you can be, do and have more. All you have to do is claim it, be willing to be held accountable and enjoy your success.

Being While Doing

Being While Doing

A great article written by a lovely woman …  Enjoy!

Being while Doing

Sometimes you may feel like you’re a human doing rather than a human being. It is so easy to get caught up in the “to do” list and the “should do” list. The endless list of tasks can leave us feeling depleted, unfulfilled and stuck; we go through our days distracted and dissatisfied.

By nature we are doers. We are designed to have goals, dreams and aspirations. And these require action – some doing. Doing is not the opposite of being; you are a human being who does things. An essential question is:

Who am I BEING while I am doing?

It speaks to who you are being on the journey of life. Are you being kind and considerate to others while you accomplish your tasks? Are you being mindful of the impact your behavior has on others? Do you take the time to feel the enjoyment and pleasure of what you are creating?

Simply BEING who you are is one of the greatest assets that you bring to your relationships. As you embody your authentic human ‘beingness’ through self discovery and your acceptance of self, you can fully be of service. As you connect with your inner resources, strengths, values and wholeness, you become more congruent, supportive and powerfully creative.
