Who Would Have Thought?

Clutter control for your homeWho would have thought? We needed some space for other things on a book shelf so I said I would help by clearing off some old VHS tapes. Well one thing lead to another and getting rid of clutter really had a mind of its own.

Not only did we clear out movies we kept “because we’ll watch them someday” but haven’t in over three or five or six years but we cleared clutter from the under the bed containers too. Craft books are also being donated that haven’t been opened in over five years. One book shelf is almost bare.

Clutter control for your homeAfter seeing at how nice the shelves looked we said “why didn’t we take a before picture—who would have thought there would be such a big difference”? I recommend always taking a before and after photo of organizing projects.

We will get rid of more clutter as we have set a goal to watch some movies in the next two weeks and then getting rid of them and if we don’t watch them in that length of time just getting rid of them. There are some family videos that we will have transferred to a DVD so it will take up a lot less space.

Wow! Getting rid of clutter sure feels good! Do you agree?

Do You Dream About Clearing Clutter?

“Happy are those who dream dreams and are ready to pay the price to make them come true”. Joseph Cardinal Suenens

Do you wish you could get rid of clutter? It isn’t that easy to just wish it away. After we have the dream of getting rid of clutter then we need to act on that dream.

Today make your dream come true by doing just one little thing to clear clutter. It could be to reduce clutter under your bathroom sink, a drawer in your desk or gather all loose papers in your home into a basket to get ready to set up a good working file system. You know my favorite is Freedom Filer because it is so simple and functional.

Dream your dream and then set about making it come true.

Don’t Clear Clutter By Being A Pop Up

Don’t Clear Clutter By Being A Pop Up

Clutter Control for your home, office and lifeDo you ever watch T.V.? I have five shows I watch and on weekends I watch movies if I can find the time. I have noticed the networks have started doing something that I find irritating and completely unnecessary.

When watching a show a pop up will appear in one or both lower corners of the screen. For an instant my eyes go to the popup and my mind is distracted from what I am watching.

Is this how we clear clutter when we are organizing? Do you pick up one piece of paper and put it down as you spot another one to pick up. Or is your mind on your next project, not giving the one you are working on your attention?

When you clear clutter stay focused on the task at hand and it will go quicker and you will actually will be more efficient.

Take Another Look To Get Rid Of Clutter

Take Another Look To Get Rid Of Clutter

Get rid of clutter in your home, office and lifeRemember that big project I told you about—helping my daughter clear clutter while organizing her storage shed?

Another idea I wanted to share is that after you have organized the bins and boxes and you have gotten rid of all the clutter (or you think you have) and you have assigned homes for everything they may need to be moved again. This applies to a storage room or any other place where you use containers.

After we had placed several containers on some shelves my daughter stood back and realized some needed to be moved because it made more sense to have them arranged differently so she could get to the ones she used most often.

So if you don’t quite know where things belong, use your best judgment and then step back and take another look. If you need to change things around that is okay. Before you know it you will have gotten rid of clutter and organized while doing it.

Julie–Happy Birthday

Julie–Happy Birthday

Clutter Control with a professional organizerHappy birthday to my daughter Julie today!

When she was packing to go away for two years to serve in the Peace Corp her room needed some serious clutter control. I couldn’t even stand to look in her room as I walked by because it looked like a tornado had hit it.

She said to me (which has become a family joke); “mom, it’s your fault I’m not organized, you never taught me”. I was agog and aghast. Now she is an expert at clutter control, packing and organizing. With all the places she has lived and worked (Albania, Eritrea (Africa), Niger, Nigeria and places in the U.S.) she now has taught me a thing or two about clutter control.

If you are working with your children teaching them how important clutter control is and you don’t seem to be getting anywhere—keep on teaching and working with them, sometimes it just takes a bit longer than we think it should take for them to be organized as we would like them to be.

How Can A Phone Help Get Rid Of Clutter?

Get rid of clutter in your home, office and lifeI bought a new phone this weekend which is helping me get rid of clutter. Now you might wonder how a phone could help get rid of clutter but it has. Already it has saved me time and not cluttered my life with unnecessary phone calls.

This phone has a block feature on it so I can program numbers I don’t want calling me. If that isn’t the easiest way to getting rid of clutter! I love it. (We are on the do not call list, but three have slipped through lately).

Do you have a neat way you get rid of clutter—something unexpected that saves you time, frustration or space in your life?

Time Management Helps With Clutter Control

Time Management Helps With Clutter Control

Clutter control for your home and lifeI had a most delightful time Tuesday talking to a women’s group on time management. If you were to save 5 minutes a day x 7 days in the week that would =35 minutes x 4 weeks that would = 149 minutes which is over 2 hours a month x 52 weeks—that is a savings of over 30 hours in a year.

Wow! What can you do to save 5 minutes a day and end up with over 30 hours a year doing something you want to do?

One thing I do in my home is clutter control. When I use something I put it away when I’m finished so things don’t pile up. I leave a drawer slightly ajar to remind me that something needs to be put away and if I haven’t done it immediately this is a subtle reminder.

Clutter Control In The Home The Fun Way

Clutter Control In The Home The Fun Way

clutter control for your homeI had such a good time this weekend. I did some quick clutter control that only took a few minutes yet it brightened my weekend. I was in my utility room which is organized with the soap, prewash, and stain treatments all together and I have a Scentsey wickless candle fragrancing (is that a word? the room. But I had the thought to get rid of five things that were in plain sight.

I really didn’t think I had things in there I didn’t use. I was in for a surprise. As I was getting rid of clutter I had to look at the room in a different way—which means really look at the room. These are the things I got rid of:

•A large silk Gerber flower. I put it in the backyard where it is so shady flowers won’t bloom. It looks pretty.
•A shirt I had only worn once but kept on a hook because I was going to dye it—bye, bye—that sure feels good.
•A rug I had draped over my small quilting frame.
•A picture frame that needed to be put away.
•A needle punch pattern that I put away.

And that is one of the reasons I had a good weekend.

When you set about getting rid of clutter in your laundry room, kitchen or any other room in your home; look at your room in a different way and challenge yourself to get rid of five things that you don’t use, don’t like, or just plain don’t want to have around.

Professional Organizers & Susan Boyle

Professional Organizers & Susan Boyle

clutter control in your homeI am one of millions who has heard Susan Boyle sing and what a beautiful voice she has. As you know she hit a bump in the road after the program “Britain’s Got Talent” and was hospitalized. But now she is out and is doing well. I am looking forward to buying her CD when it comes out.

I think getting rid of clutter in our homes and lives is just like what Ms. Boyle experienced. We go along doing a great job keeping clutter under control and then bump– life happens and we get off track because we become overwhelmed or perhaps because of sickness or other situations.

Just like Ms. Boyle did getting help from professional’s maybe we need a professional organizer to help us get back on track to get rid of clutter. They bring a wealth of information, are non judgmental and are experts in organizing, helping in ways you never even thought of.

Have you ever used a professional organizer? If so, how did the experience help your life?
