Who Would Have Thought?

Clutter control for your homeWho would have thought? We needed some space for other things on a book shelf so I said I would help by clearing off some old VHS tapes. Well one thing lead to another and getting rid of clutter really had a mind of its own.

Not only did we clear out movies we kept “because we’ll watch them someday” but haven’t in over three or five or six years but we cleared clutter from the under the bed containers too. Craft books are also being donated that haven’t been opened in over five years. One book shelf is almost bare.

Clutter control for your homeAfter seeing at how nice the shelves looked we said “why didn’t we take a before picture—who would have thought there would be such a big difference”? I recommend always taking a before and after photo of organizing projects.

We will get rid of more clutter as we have set a goal to watch some movies in the next two weeks and then getting rid of them and if we don’t watch them in that length of time just getting rid of them. There are some family videos that we will have transferred to a DVD so it will take up a lot less space.

Wow! Getting rid of clutter sure feels good! Do you agree?

Warm And Fuzzy

Warm And Fuzzy

Clutter control for your home and lifeThis doesn’t have anything thing to do with getting rid of clutter or organizing, I just wanted to share these two little warm and fuzzy stories with you.

When we were at Bryce Canyon last week we were getting in the car after leaving the visitors center and my daughter comes running past us saying “I just found some money where those people pulled out of the parking space and I have to catch them”. She came back disappointed as it wasn’t them who had lost it. Into the visitors center she went to report she had found money and gave them contact information in case anyone asked if any money was turned in. (It was about $20.00).

My daughter turned it in to the ranger who wanted her name and contact information. (We don’t know why as we certainly would see it again).

It feels good to do the right thing dontchathink? What have you done lately that has made you feel good about doing the right thing?

Do You Dream About Clearing Clutter?

“Happy are those who dream dreams and are ready to pay the price to make them come true”. Joseph Cardinal Suenens

Do you wish you could get rid of clutter? It isn’t that easy to just wish it away. After we have the dream of getting rid of clutter then we need to act on that dream.

Today make your dream come true by doing just one little thing to clear clutter. It could be to reduce clutter under your bathroom sink, a drawer in your desk or gather all loose papers in your home into a basket to get ready to set up a good working file system. You know my favorite is Freedom Filer because it is so simple and functional.

Dream your dream and then set about making it come true.

Are Your Photos Creating Clutter?

Clutter control for your home, office and lifeIt is so nice when someone lets me know that my advice works. As a professional organizer I give a lot of tips about organizing everything in your homes and lives. My friend Edna told me she wanted to get rid of clutter in her home and more specifically the clutter she has with her photos.

I recommend to get rid of clutter when it comes to those boxes of photos or envelops of photos or even lose photos to follow these 4 tips:

•Gather your photos all in one place.
•Set a timer and start going through your photos and get rid of the ones you don’t remember or never knew who they were. Get rid of bad pictures. You know the ones where someone looks ugly and they really aren’t or the photo is fuzzy or a picture of the sky or floor was taken by mistake. When the timer dings take a break and come back later.
•Organize your photos the way you want—by person, event, year etc. If you don’t care, that is okay. If your goal is just to get them in an album that’s fine.
•Buy a photo album where you can slip in the photos, write next to it who it is and if you want the date it was taken. Embellish with stickers if you want and voila you are done.

This method makes getting rid of clutter easy and you feel so good having your photos organized without spending a small fortune and taking up all your time.

This is the technique Edna used and she told me she feels so good to have her photos all in one place and she doesn’t have to worry about them anymore and she can enjoy them.

Doing Nothing And Clearing Clutter

Doing Nothing And Clearing Clutter

“There’s never enough time to do all the nothing you want”.—Calvin and Hobbes

Isn’t this just the truth? We all want to have joy and fun in our life but do we put off doing the nothing we want to do because we think we have to get rid of clutter in our homes before we can do nothing?

Because I am a professional organizer I am big on getting rid of clutter but I suggest we don’t wait until we have everything exactly the way we want it, that along with clearing clutter we take time for ourselves to do the nothing of our choice.

After you have gotten rid of clutter (even just 15 minutes worth) what are you going to do to reward yourself and do the nothing you want to do?

I LOVE to organize so I just might choose to organize something but if that doesn’t count I will relax with a book and a chocolate ice cream. If I sit still for a minute I probably will find myself asleep.

Get Rid of Clutter by Donating Your Old Cell Phone

Get Rid of Clutter by Donating Your Old Cell Phone

Clutter Control for your home, office and lifeAs you are getting rid of clutter if you come across an old cell phone and don’t know what to do with it–you can donate it at cellphonesforsoldiers.com. This is a great service for our soldiers. The phones are sold to a company that recycles phones and the money is used to purchase calling cards that are sent to troops in need.

My daughter found a phone in her shed as she was getting rid of clutter and was happy to find a place to send her phone (free postage-paid shipping labels are available) that will benefit someone else.

As you are getting rid of clutter and you come across a phone I suggest you go to cellphonesforsoldiers.com and donate it to a worthy cause.

See What You Have When Getting Rid Of Clutter

See What You Have When Getting Rid Of Clutter

Getting rid of clutter in your home, office and lifeFor the last 3 ½ days I have been involved in a MAJOR organizing project which was unexpected. My daughter decided to go through every box in her storage shed as she wanted to clear clutter so she could walk into the room and make it more functional. As it was she could get the door open and just toss things inside.

After she had taken out all 624 boxes (it was probably less but it felt like that many) I saw her walking around looking in this box and then another. I suggested that to get rid of clutter in the boxes she needed to find out what was in all of them so she could move items from one box to another so all like things would be together. If I had said and done nothing else that was a huge tip that she said more than once was VERY helpful in her getting rid of clutter. It also saved her a lot of time.

Even though it wasn’t my space it feels so good to know she can now find anything she wants when she wants it.

Do you have any major organizing projects coming up at your home?

There Are No Organizing Police

There Are No Organizing Police

Clutter control I belong to two quilting groups and when someone is showing a quilt they have made and they start apologizing about it not being perfect because points on a star were cut off or some other quilting “no-no we laugh and say, “it doesn’t matter, your quilt is beautiful and there are no quilt police”.

It is the same thing with organizing—there are no Organizing Police. When you are getting rid of clutter do you feel guilty because you bought (whatever it is) and never used it so you hang on to it and it just creates clutter? Is getting rid of clutter hard because you liked it when you bought it so you think you should hang on to it—forever?

Do you feel guilty getting rid of clutter because that clutter (oops, I mean thing) was given to you by someone else? If you don’t like it, don’t use it, or it doesn’t light you up, remember…..there are no Organizing Police; it is okay to get rid of clutter no matter where or how it made it into your home.

New Use For Timer To Get Rid Of Clutter

New Use For Timer To Get Rid Of Clutter

Get rid of clutter in your home, office and lifeNow maybe I have said this before but I love timers. I was going to straighten up my kitchen, load a few dishes and do that kind of stuff. But I didn’t want to spend a lot of time doing it so I set my timer for 9 minutes.

My epiphany was this: I use timers when I start a project such as getting rid of clutter in a particular room but I am dragging my feet on doing it. When I set a time limit this gives me permission to stop when the timer rings and come back to it later.

As I was working in the kitchen I started to leave the room and check on the cat that was outside. I stopped myself because I only had a certain amount of minutes that I had allotted myself and had set the timer for.

When the second “temptation” to go and do something else happened I realized that just by setting my timer it had helped me stay on task. (I finished before the 9 minutes were up and I went on to another room and did the same thing).

As you are getting rid of clutter I suggest you set a timer to stay on task.
