Your Appearance Is Sending Unconscious Signals

It’s a well-known fact that we’re constantly sending signals to people.  Body language, gestures and phrases all come into play.  What we may not realize, though, is how our appearance plays a part in sending signals, too.  From clothing to hair and make-up, we’re telling the world where we’re at emotionally.  Knowing what you’re showing can help you understand why you’re getting the reactions you are, and how to modify yourself to being irresistible.

Starting with hair: the length of your hair can reflect your personality.  The shorter and more stylish it is, the more it tells others you’re high-maintenance, high-strung and meticulous.  It can also be a signal of insecurity because of the constant upkeep.  The most girlfriend-friendly hairstyles are mid-length, from chin to shoulders.  You take care of yourself, but don’t overdo it.  Long hair can be two different things:  either you’re attempting to recapture or play on youthfulness (which can be a sign of desperation if you’re an older woman) or that you simply don’t care.

Hair color is another readable factor.  Many women color their hair, and the choices in coloring speak volumes.  Black hair is the intentional rebel.  Brown hair is (again) the most friendly, because it’s the most common.  With warm highlights, it shows openness.  Red hair is the rarest, and will soon die out altogether.  A woman who colors her hair red is ready for a relationship and looking for attention.  Bottle blonds can come off as icy or unapproachable, and because the bleach does so much damage the ends get brittle.  Not keeping it trimmed makes a stereotypical cheapness.

The clothing we wear is also a reflection, not just in the style but in the color choices.  Here are the most common:

  • Red. Again, signaling that you’re ready for a relationship or looking for some excitement. It’s the most eye-catching color, and that’s what it’s worn for.
  • Black. Either a protection mechanism or a contrast to highlight the other features (i.e. figure and face).
  • Brown. While it may be natural, it’s also a natural repellent since it brings to mind dinge and dirt.
  • Yellow. Happiness, sunniness and joy in general, it can also scare people away from you if it’s too bright.  Imagine someone cheerful waking you up at 5am on a Sunday.
  • White. Spotlessness tells of a clean freak, someone who would insist on coasters at the dinner table.  It can also be a sign of purity or untouchable-ness.
  • Purple. A free spirit wears purple, and doesn’t care who likes it or not.  Especially vivid purples.  Independent and feisty.

  • Blue. It can be complementary (for example, to match or bring out blue eyes) or it can seem commonplace or general.  Blue is the most common color worn by both men and women, and it blends in.
  • Monotone outfits. Wearing all of one color is the same as erecting a wall between you and the world.
  • Clashing outfits. A reflection of a lack of taste or thought, or it could be a cry for attention.

Make-up is an obvious way to tell a lot about someone.  Pan-cake make-up has connections to insecurities and cheapness.  Au naturelle is a coin-toss between natural beauty and confidence or laziness.  The in-betweens are saying they take care of themselves but don’t obsess.

It might be good to know the next time you’re getting ready for a hot date exactly what unspoken subtleties you’re telling him, and vice-versa.

New Hair Styles For 2009 – Keep One Step Ahead in the Fashion Game

As the years go by, it’s difficult to keep up with the times. Keeping ahead of the fashion game can sometimes feel like a downhill struggle, especially when we don’t get it right. Everyone’s had that embarrassing fashion mishap, at least once right? Let’s take a look at some of the new hair styles for 2009 and take one step forward – not two steps back.

It’s true, that you can keep all your old clothes and eventually – everything comes back into fashion. What old hairstyles will we see returning this year? 1940’s retro fashion is ‘in’ right now. Sophistication is what’s seen down the catwalks. Fabulous kinks and updo’s, these hairstyles are high maintenance.

Don’t have the patience for these high upkeep looks? Don’t threat, there’s always something that will suit you – it’s just finding it. On the other end of the sophistication scale, ‘bed head’ – fluffy curls, kinda of an unkempt look is very popular and fashionable.

What colors going to be hot this year? Red’s coming back – BIG, from strong copper tones to the deeper pink colors.

Side sweeps, blunt fringes, layers and the bob are becoming extremely popular – no huge changes here. Short short crops will be the look to keep an eye out for – predicted to make a massive comeback by the hair industry.

Still unsure on getting some fashion credibility? Pop down to your local hairdressers and ask for some advice, they understand the fashion game more than anyone. You don’t have to go for any big changes, having layers might just give you the edge you’ve been looking for.

7 concessions and a challenge to the Gen-Y naysayers

Cynics have decided that I’m a “Gen-Y Princess” floating oblivious amongst the clouds, here and here.

More specifically, that I’m a high-maintenance spoiled brat. But who’s counting.

I appreciate criticism, even if it’s lackluster on the constructive side. I want this blog to recognize and appreciate the foundation that previous generations have laid and build upon it. To greatness. I want it to be about dialogue and community. And kicking some major butt. This includes realizing when I haven’t given the full picture. Here are seven concessions to the Gen-Y naysayers:

1) Gen-Y will fail. Miserably. We won’t change the world straight away. You have to fail to succeed. When you haven’t wiped the crud off your shoes, you can’t develop emotional intelligence, which is an important factor for career advancement. Only experience will help us learn. Let us take the reins quickly so we can learn quickly.

2) We’re idealistic and naïve. We want to believe in the dream of changing the world a little longer. Why are other generations so intent on crushing the dreams of idealistic youth so swiftly? What sense is there in bringing us to the dark side? Don’t break my knees just as I’m training for the marathon.

3) You have to play the game to win. I know that. I’ve talked about it here. But guess what? The current game sucks. So, along the way, we’re going to break every rule and change what it means to win.

4) Patience is a virtue too. Millennials are an impatient bunch. We want to change things right away, right now, this instant. Patience is crucial in this process to avoid burnout. We understand change takes time, and don’t mind, as long as we’re taking action. Gen-Y patience is about perseverance.

5) You have to pay dues. No one gets to skip paying dues all together. I didn’t like my first job, but I moved on. Good things are learned from bad experiences. The key is to learn those things and move on as soon as possible. The real world isn’t all that great sometimes. Young workers shouldn’t have to pay dues to a workforce that is often dirty, unethical and shameful.

6) We can’t all be leaders. Not all of us are suited to be leaders. True. But the last time I checked, we need leaders to encourage positive change. Most movements today – political, environmental, social – all greatly suffer from lack of visionary leadership. The more quality leaders we can cultivate, the better.

7) Loyalty is important. Gen Y plays the field of careers. It’s not good. But it’s not bad. We’re twenty-somethings; loyalty means something different to us. It’s not about time, but the value that the company and the Gen-Y employee offer each other.

And now the challenge…

The discussion surrounding Generation Y should center on how we can leverage our weaknesses into strengths and how we can use our unique talents effectively in our professional development, entrepreneurial, social, public policy, and philanthropic endeavors.

So please, tell me:

How can Generation Y show respect and learn from previous generations so that we may fully engage in meaningful interactions to our mutual benefit? How can we work together to fulfill our dreams?

Really, I want to know the answer.
