Accessing The Power of Gratitude

dsc03558

The practice of gratitude as a tool for happiness has been a part of the life coaching hand-book for years. Long-term studies support gratitude’s effectiveness, suggesting that a positive, appreciative attitude contributes to greater success in work, greater health, peak performance in sports and business, a higher sense of well-being, and a faster rate of recovery from illness.

But while we may acknowledge gratitude’s many benefits, it still can be difficult to sustain. So many of us are trained to notice what is broken, undone or lacking in our lives. And for gratitude to meet its full healing potential in our lives, it needs to become more than just a Thanksgiving word. We have to learn a new way of looking at things, a new habit. And that can take some time.

That’s why practicing gratitude makes so much sense. When we practice giving thanks for all we have, instead of complaining about what we lack, we give ourselves the chance to see all of life as an opportunity and a blessing.

Remember that gratitude isn’t a blindly optimistic approach in which the bad things in life are whitewashed or ignored. It’s more a matter of where we put our focus and attention. Pain and injustice exist in this world, but when we focus on the gifts of life, we gain a feeling of well-being.

Gratitude balances us and gives us hope.

There are many things to be grateful for: brilliant sunsets, colorful summer flowers, legs that work, friends who really listen, dark chocolate, garden fresh vegetables, warm jackets, the ability to read, your health, butterflies. What’s on your list?

Some Ways to Practice Gratitude

•  Keep a gratitude journal in which you list things for which you are thankful. You can make daily, weekly or monthly lists. Greater frequency may be better for creating a new habit, but just keeping that journal where you can see it will remind you to think in a grateful way.

•  Make a gratitude collage by drawing or pasting pictures.

•  Practice gratitude around the dinner table or make it part of your nighttime routine.

•  Make a game of finding the hidden blessing in a challenging situation.

•  When you feel like complaining, make a gratitude list instead. You may be amazed by how much better you feel.

•  Notice how gratitude is impacting your life. Write about it, sing about it, express thanks for gratitude.

As you practice, an inner shift begins to occur, and you may be delighted to discover how content and hopeful you are feeling. That sense of fulfillment is gratitude at work.

Flexible Living

Flexible Living

Flexibility is defined as the quality of being flexible, pliable and supple.

Growing up as a gymnast, the things I could do with my body were simply outrageous …

Almost as if my spine were made of a slinky.

Thankfully some of my childhood physical flexibility carried over into my adult yoga practice. With this being said, when I think about flexibility, the physical body comes to mind.

My friend Akemi Gaines, a prolific blogger and Akashic Reader, learned that my souls purpose is to learn flexibility of the mind, body and spirit.

To be more open minded … go with the flow of life.

What is an Akashic Soul Reading?

The Akashic Records are a subconscious data bank of the soul where all past life (and future) information is stored. It is similar to the memory of Universe, containing each individual souls path, purpose, and life mission. An Akashic Reading contains personal information about what your soul most needs to know to fulfill it’s mission here on Earth, as well as specific details to attaining your highest enlightened state of being.

The news of my reading was accepted heartily since balance, flexibility and self care is the moniker of my life coaching practice.

AND

Next month’s Yoga teacher training experience will prove to be an enormous lesson in versatility.

Akemi’s Akashic reading uncovered some of the mystery behind my current goals, dreams and interests.

AND …

No matter how you feel about this kind of study, the experience was a lot of fun! I will blog more about the Akashic Reading and soul clearing soon. In the mean time check out Akemi’s website to learn more about her services.

#

Here are some ideas to consider if you want to become more flexible.

  • Physical Flexibility can come in many forms. Stretching, yoga, pilates, gymnastics, and swimming are all fine ways to keep the body young and supple.

  • Mental Flexibility is a matter of sustained learning and child like wonder and curiosity. Pay close attention to children and how they describe and ask questions about their world.

  • Spiritual Flexibility may be as simple as realizing that an open mind can be  a great host creating lots of space for peace and understanding.

Namaste’

Tick Tock – Managing Your Time

Tick Tock – Managing Your Time

Today it dawned on me that in six short days I will be 100% immersed in a yoga teacher training sabbatical.

Holy CRAP!

How in the world will I ever get my act together personally and professionally to fully enjoy this life changing experience?

Commence with the clarity …

No need to fret.

No need to freak out.

I have been planning, communicating , preparing and asking for assistance for months.

Here is super swank list of time management tips for anybody getting ready to drop off of the radar for awhile.

  • Communicate with your family, friends, clients and business partners
As soon as you make a commitment to change the world as you know it, start letting people know whats up. Direct communication will build more excitement and create a safe space to begin planning for your time away.

  • Delegate as much as you can as soon as you can

It is okay to ask for help. Get clear about what you need and delegate some of your regular responsibilities. My husband will be taking my daughter to 4H in the morning, my business partner at Seize True Success will be fielding our franchisee business calls, my virtual assistants will be conducting yoga retreat research and submitting professional articles online for True Balance Life Coaching. I will be checking my email and voice mail in the evening for any additional delegation.

  • Keep your clients in the loop

My Life Coaching and Business Coaching clients (save one) have all been willing to revise our regular coaching session times for the month of August. Thankfully the coaching relationships I’ve fostered are strong enough to ask for occasional flexibility.

  • Let go of any guilt or shame about your choice to experience something fantastic

How many times have you heard the phrase – you only live once? Seriously, it would be
silly to let go of a dream in order to keep everybody happy. News Flash! Everybody is not
happy anyhow … Go for it! I was momentarily sad to lose a coaching client because of my decision to earn certification, but … I know I will attract a new coaching client this September to take her place.

  • Make a list of important tasks and create helpful plans

Get clear about the things you normally do that need to be continued while you are away. For me this involves a well thought out menu plan for my family. Special dates, events and due dates will be shared on a white board to keep things straight.

  • Let go of the minutia

Getting wrapped up in minutia can be devastating. The seemingly endless tiny details of life will take care of themselves. Do yourself a favor and allow for some flexibility. Life will go on if the house gets messy or the laundry piles up. Your partner may not do things exactly as you would …. BIG DEAL.

Managing your time is as easy as planning, communicating, asking for help and letting go.

Off I go into the wild blue Yoga Yonder … I am so EXCITED!

10 Ways to a Graceful Career Transition

10 Ways to a Graceful Career Transition

stressThese is no doubt career transitions can be stressful.

If you’re facing a significant career transition, here are 10 ways to move gracefully through the experience.

  • Take an honest look at yourself. What are your strengths, weaknesses and skills? How did these attributes influence your transition? How can you leverage your strengths?

  • Increase your self-care. Major changes are physically and emotionally taxing. You need EXTREME self-care now more than ever.

  • Engage your curiosity. What went wrong, or right? What could you have done better? What worked really well?

  • Focus on what you want, and less on what you don’t want. Create a comparison and contrast T Chart with what you don’t want on the left and what you do want on the right.  What did you learn?

  • Find support. Since your transition affects your family as well, it may be better to seek the outside support of friends, mentors or a professional life coach.

  • Be Mindful of your thoughts. Calm your fears and reinforce your sense of gratitude, hope and happiness.

  • Stay away from people who are threatened,  jealous or unwilling to support your change.

  • Create your own rite of passage. Ceremony and ritual help with all transitions.

  • Let go of how things were “supposed to be” and accept “how things are.”

  • Keep things in perspective. Or try on a new perspective. The only constant in your life is change.

Allow yourself the time to work through a serious career transition, keep your family and close friends involved, allow for setbacks, work on a reasonable time line and find humor in the day to day journey.  Your life is so much more important than you can imagine.

Do You Hate Your Job….and Can’t Leave Now?

Do You Hate Your Job….and Can’t Leave Now?

Hatejob Do you hate the job you have and don’t know how to make it better? Learn why you need stop complaining and start changing your work environment for the better (if you decide to stay).  What can you do?

  1. 1. Decide if you want to stay or leave. Once you know your course of action you can begin to move in a direction.
  • This is a very important decision and does not need to be made in a hurry or when you are unsure or upset.
  • These decisions need to be made when your mind is calm so you can be sure you are doing what is best for you in the long run.
  • …and not what is most expedient (or what you feel like) at the moment. Once you know what you want to do, then you can move cleanly in a new direction.
  1. Stop complaining and gossiping.
  • Having a reputation as a whiner is never in your best interests.
  • Whining and complaining are what we do when we do not want to confront our fears.
  • Moving in a new direction is always scary; so is dealing with an issue, but if we want to eventually have peace, we need to stop complaining and step up, doing whatever needs to be done so we can move on.
  1. Understand the job hierarchy; Who is in charge, who directly affects what you do everyday?
  • Really smart people understand there is hierarchy in most work places.
  • Figure out early on what it is and who you will interact with.
  • Be respectful of the hierarchy and cultivate relationships with superiors that have your best interests at heart.

    4.  Be genuine and talk to the decision maker.

  • You do not have to have a solution to the problem to have a feeling.
  • Sometimes we aren’t willing to address a problem if we don’t know the solution. That’s silly but that’s what we do.
  • The best solutions often come from exploration, traveling the journey and finding the answer along the way

    5.  Be more interested in feeling right rather than being right.

  • Pick your battles carefully.
  • Leave your ego outside.
  • Sincerely be interested in solving the problem more than being right.

Dealing with Jealousy

Dealing with Jealousy

Jealousy Is jealousy ruining your relationship? Learn how to deal with a jealous partner and what you can do to change that.

1.  Jealousy comes from insecurity. It is always about you, your feelings, and how you handle a situation.

  • Jealousy is never about the other person. It is all about how secure you feel in yourself.
  • If you know you deserve to be loved, you do not have to worry about jealousy.
  • If you are healthy, you will never put up with a relationship that is distrusting.

2.  Jealousy eats you up from the inside out. It is poison and destroys relationships.

  • Do not ever excuse jealous behavior.
  • Jealousy is toxic. There is never a good reason for jealousy.
  • If you do not feel secure in a relationship, you need to address your fears and concerns. What are you really feeling? Usually it is not jealousy but rather a mixture a fear and sadness.

3. Participating in jealous interchanges takes two people.

  • Never mistake jealousy for a compliment this is addictive behavior.
  • “She’s jealous because she loves me” – No…that is not the reason she is jealous and also, she doesn’t really love you.
  • Love and jealousy are two mutually exclusive entities; they have nothing to do with one another.

4.  Love is open, the ego is quiet; there is peacefulness and trust in the relationship.

  • Jealousy is closed, and the ego is screaming; you both feel shut down and self-protective.
  • When there is love, there is trust; there is acceptance and ease in the relationship.
  • Jealousy is the opposite of love.  Love is about breaking down the walls of separation, jealousy is about putting them up.

5.  If someone wants to cheat, there is nothing you can do to stop that, so stop trying. People are  faithful because that is what they want to do!

  • Jealousy changes you, the way you see yourself. You eventually lose your self-respect and self-esteem.
  • Your jealousy can cause drama but it cannot succeed in changing another person.
  • People change because they want to. If you have a partner who is behaving in a way that demeans and diminishes you, she will only change that behavior because she wants to, not because you want her to.

How to Internet Date

How to Internet Date

Do you want to increase your relationship possibilities but does Internet dating make you nervous?

Five Things You Need To Know About Internet Dating:

  1. It’s no better or worse than any other kind of dating.  How discriminating you are determines how successful your experience will be.
    • There is no substitute for discrimination.  Do you know when someone has good character and will you stay away from someone who has bad character?

  1. Be honest – represent yourself as you truly are (not what you looked like 10 years ago!)
    • A client told me she was having bad experiences on-line dating. She told me the telephone conversations were great, but the meetings weren’t.  I asked to see a copy of her on-line profile and I knew why she was having a problem.  The girl in the picture didn’t look like the one sitting in front of me.
    • When you portray yourself to be something other than what you are, that is a form of betrayal.

  1. Meet for coffee first – you do not want to have to bolt your dessert.
    • Aren’t your tired of not having desert?  Have a glass of wine.  It’s a short interaction that doesn’t take too much time in a place you can easily leave from.

  1. Ask questions – Do not be afraid to ask what makes you feel comfortable.
    • Someone who is interested in getting to know you for real will be willing to tell you anything that will make you feel more comfortable.  Someone who has nothing to hide has nothing to hide.

  1. Trust your instincts.  Don’t ignore your feelings; oftentimes we get the best information that way.
    • Instincts bypass the intellect – thank God.  We sure don’t want the mind interfering. Instincts are clean; they are our inner voice and we need to listen to them.

Are you Stuck In A Relationship That Doesn’t Work?

Are you Stuck In A Relationship That Doesn’t Work?

Do you feel stuck in your relationship and can’t figure out what to do next? How do you know if you are stuck?

1. You keep repeating the same story over and over again.

  • Are you finally bored with your story?
  • Until you are tired of hearing the same old stuff, you can never move on.
  • Remember, you can “be right” but not “feel right”.

2.  You tell friends and family to get consensus for your point of view.

  • Anyone who is not sympathetic to your tale of woe quickly gets deleted from your phone. The more people you can get who agree with you, the more validated and “right” you feel. But the ego is only assuaged for the moment, and you quickly get on the phone to call the next person.
  • And a note to friends and family – You are not doing anyone a favor listening continuously to the drama.
  • The more a person repeats his tale of woe, the more hard-wired it becomes.

3. You start every sentence with “Yes, but….” every time you get a suggestion to improve your situation.

  • I have a friend I call the “yes, but girl”. No matter what suggestion she is given, her respond is always “yes, but”.
  • What that means to me is that she has no intention of changing – she simply makes excuses and wants to be right.
  • Being stuck is about being repetitious.  Honestly listen to yourself.

4. You recognize the same patterns even though the names and faces are different.

  • OK. Here’s the deal. The names and places are different but he’s the same guy.
  • Be honest with yourself. Are the patterns the same from one relationship to the next? Do you keep attracting “commitment phobic” guys?
  • If you do, you need to look at yourself and make the adjustment there.
